Unit 69: Presenting Concept Artwork for Computer Games - Task 4

In terms of the general layout of the portfolio website, I believe I have created a simple, professional looking website to present my work. I really like the look of the template I used for the site, as the black and white theme I used looks professional but simple. Each page has symmetry with the other, as each has a home button, which doubles as a navigation menu, and with my title at the top. I personally think it suits the purpose of a portfolio perfectly, although it is not in the layout of a traditional portfolio. I think this because it presents the artwork in different pages rather than one single page, so the viewer can focus on a single drawing rather than many; however, this pattern is broken with the 'Other' page, as I felt I didn't have enough to talk about a single drawing in comparison to the other pages, so I added multiple to one page. Compared to my original intentions, the website has come out really well; as I thought that my website would look more akin to my web blog, which looks less professional. However, thanks to the templates supplied by wix.com I was able to create a design that looks truly professional and has a distinct design. Overall, I am very pleased with the design of my portfolio blog, as it combines easy navigation with a simple, professional design.

Assignment 3 - Unit 69

Anatomy Concept Art:

Anatomy (e.g. characters, creatures):

Here is an attempt at drawing anatomy with a graphics tablet. Overall, I am pleased with the result in comparison as to what it would look like if I had drawn it in pencil, as in my opinion I am a lot better at drawing with a graphics tablet than I am with a pencil. I think it definitely fits the purpose of what I want it to portray, as it is obviously a human anatomy drawing. The drawing shouldn't be offensive to anyone, as it is neither racist, sexist or offensive in any way. My source of reference for this drawing was a simple Google search for 'human anatomy', which gave quick results.

Here is my drawing of a 'swallowtail' caterpillar. Overall I am very pleased with how this drawing came out and I have used it for animation work in the past. It effectively fits the purpose, as it is obvious that it is a caterpillar. This drawing should be offensive to no one, as a caterpillar isn't racist sexist or offensive in any way at all. My source of reference for this caterpillar drawing was a quick search for 'caterpillar'.

This is a drawing of an ant that I created using a graphics tablet. I like the overall look of this ant, as it has a cartoon style to it but still maintains a level of realism, if such a thing could be achieved from a simple drawing. As a reference, I used an image from Google Images and based the drawing around a simple image of an ant. This should be offensive to no one at all, as an ant represents no racist or sexist views.

Here I have a drawing of a butterfly I created for a previous assignment. I believe it fits the purpose perfectly as it is quite obviously a butterfly. Again, as a reference I used Google Images to find a simple image of a butterfly. This should offend no one, as it represents no racist or sexist views.

Environment Concept Art:

Environment (e.g. plants, buildings, terrain):

Here is my drawing of a futuristic building/outpost that I drew using a graphics tablet. Overall I am pleased with the result; although if I were to draw it again I would change the size of my brush to add detail, as it is not immediately obvious as to where the contours of the building are and where the detail is. This shouldn't offend anyone, as it is just a building. As a reference, I used Google to search 'futuristic building', and this was one of the results.

Here is a drawing of a simple hill background, with a road, clouds and the sun. This was intended to be simple as it was supposed to look like something that would be in a childrens book, as it was originally intended to be in use for my 'The Extremely Hungry Caterpillars' 2D animation. This absolutely fits the purpose as it looks simple, and is not too detailed to the point where the viewer's attention would particularly be on the background during the animation. This should not offend anybody, as it is just a hill.

Here is a drawing of a tree I created as a counterpart for the above background. Again, it fits a simple childrens story style, with simple colours and little detail. This fits the purpose as it is quite obviously a tree. This shouldn't offend anybody, as it is just a tree.

Object Concept Art:

Objects (e.g. machines, vehicles, weapons):

Here is my drawing of a chainsword using a graphics tablet. Overall I am pleased with the result of this drawing, as it has straight lines rather than curved and 'wavy' lines. This was achieved by simply holding the 'shift' key while drawing, as I would otherwise be unable to create straight lines. My reference for this drawing was a quick Google search for chainsaw weapons. This may offend those of the public who consider themselves pacifists or those offended by gore. Although, it does not portray any sexist or racist views at all.

Here is my drawing of a chainaxe, I used a graphics tablet to draw this. Overall I am very pleased with the result of this drawing, as it has a smooth, almost professional quality to it in my opinion. It fits the purpose as it looks like a hybrid between an axe and a chainsaw. Again, as above, my reference for this drawing was a Google search for 'chainsaw weapons'. This also may offend some members of the public who are pacifists or offended by gore, although the drawing itself features no gore, it insinuates it. However, it portrays no sexist or racist views.

Here is my drawing of a broken angelic mask, using a graphics tablet. It fits the purpose as it has an angelic statue style to it, but looks like something that could be worn as a mask. I found inspiration for this by searching 'interesting masks', which gave some very interesting results. This may offend some religious members of the public, as I have drawn a broken angels face.

Constraints:

Client Brief: Constraints may be caused by the clients' brief because of the restrictions of their brief. Such as the client wanting only anatomy, environments and objects. This has proved difficult because I am not very skilled in drawing realistic looking characters, environments and objects; as I am more skilled in drawing cartoon-style disproportionate drawings.

Target Audience: The target audience for an artistic piece may restrict an artist's creative skills. Such as limiting the amount of gore or profanity in the artwork. Working for a client such as SEGA would restrict an artist as their primary target is typically younger children, with games such as Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed. These also have a cartoon style to the characters, environments and objects; this would restrict the artist to this specific style, instead of a more realistic style.

Legal Issues: An artist would also have to consider legal issues such as original and franchised intellectual property. As for example, when creating the Wreck-it-Ralph character in Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed, the animators had to first gain permission from Disney to use their Wreck-it-Ralph character as it is their intellectual property.

Ethical Issues (e.g. decency): Artists would also have to consider ethical issues such as decency. For example, if an artist was to create a character for a new Super Mario game, then they would have to make sure that the character has sufficient clothing and does not show any indecent areas.

Representation (e.g. race, gender, religion, sexuality): When creating concept art, an artist would have to consider the representation of their drawings, such as considering the effect of race, gender, religion and sexuality. This is especially important as a games company wouldn't want to offend a particular race, gender, religion and sexuality.
